Like recieving rage comments from pityful nerds with no life? They will totally damage my view of the fans and make me stop, because their emotions touch me deep inside…
My interest in realism ended also there where it just became a copy-paste from reality and less an approach to create new stuff. Doesn’t mean you can’t create ‘new’ with a realistic style. But the limits are different than when you go cartoony.
There is no doubt that you can only break the rules, when you learned them. But there is no rule how you approach each wisdom.
I had life drawing classes. It bored me hard to draw penises and boobies all day. It was more like finding the perfect body in reality, than doing the perfect one from your mind.
I don’t think you have to draw endless realistic drawings to finally get there where you wanna go in cartoon. I for myself went from cartoon to cartoon. The learning curve is equal. Doesn’t mean my art improved not from doing realism.
I know a lot realism artists who have a hard time to understand cartoon at all, because they are too stuck in the rules. But I saw cartoon artists who had also trouble doing realism (*cough* me *cough*). I had to hold myself back, before i went bonkers with the drawing. Some people told me already that they want my wacky ink drawing styles from 2006 back, but I grew out of it.
It’s always hard to say what is the best way. I always say to that ‘the way is the destination’. Do what you like, when it feels right, then ok. If its technical or artistical not a good work is a judgemental issue, but not a part of the choice of style you wanna approach, but more how far you can get better in something.
Did I make sense here? Who knows…. I go to bed and give my sleepless mind a rest.
