Anonym fragte: What is your opinion on sexism in the entertainment industry?
Oh god, someone asked the ‘bad’ question…
Let’s see how many people I’ll piss off with my opinion.
I see sexism -like gore- as a part of the industry. You cannot erase it, it will always be there. When you try to remove it, it will come back underground and maybe come back in a worse way than before. Without any rules or discipline it can go complete bonkers. Completly removing or outlawing it is contraproductive. Seeing away the same. So don’t fight it, accept it BUT concentrate on the stuff that does it right.
But, like with gore in movies and videogames is sexism not the reason why sexism is there. It’s not creating a rape-monster or murder. It’s just the easy way to get comfort for already crazy minds. It may keeps them on a sane ground or maybe motivates them to commit bad acts… It’s a matter of the person that uses these things. There are insane people who have control over themselves and crazy people with no control… Bad example, but think about what happens when ALL porn gets removed on this planet…
In my real opinion, I hate low taste stuff. I don’t like overly sexist stuff or gore. There are few examples where its different, but then It has a different reason to be like that. Either its a satire or is necassary to get a story or emotion out of the audience. When it’s just there because ‘they can do it’, then it’s ‘porn’ (I remind you of my answer; what the difference between erotic and porn is).
The point is. Do we really need to look at trash -And seriously… we don’t enjoy high class art here… we watch cartoons, look at anime and other stuff that is low art- and need to rage about stuff that is way under the normal trash level?
We watched and enjoyed all the stuff we like now, because it was on a level we can enjoy, gives us feelings or emotions we never felt before or got labeled as harmfull for us. And sadly, a big part of that industry we enjoy made a lot porn and other low taste arts.
Don’t get me wrong (my english is limited too, so don’t blame me). I am the first ranting about an ‘escher girl’ on a DC or Marvel cover… or raging about the new trend to show boys without shirts to please our teenage girl audience right now. But it’s all made in the same sense like the more ‘tastefull’ stuff. To entertain the middle class. And the middle class is not filled with high-cultured people… sorry, but that is the reality. And even high-class art/entertainment has really low points.
When you feel and need more quality in the entertainment, be the one who pushes it. Motivate people to watch good stuff and or maybe set your own ideals in your own creative works.Support artists with ideals and quality. That is the way to lower bad tastes. Fill the market with smart stuff and make it popular.
I can always point at the entertainers who make big chunks of money with sexism, gore or swearing, that is easy and won’t remove the real prob.
Women still get sexually herassed in jobs or even worse in fanatic religious groups. THERE you should start to fight. At the end the entertainment will progress with it. Sexism is everywhere. It may starts in the entertainment industry, but it ends not with it. When you have the urge to fight against sexism, don’t search for the judas in the art and entertainment buisness. And when you really wanna remove it also from the indsutry…don’t buy the trash. Don’t support it. Don’t yell at it and make it popular around the net by creating a silly hype or controversy, where none really is.
In my opinion it’s the lowest and easiest way to act like a feminist or masculinist when seeing probs in the lower art world. Playing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter and acting like its the worst thing ever happened to the gender rights or morals is pointless… and even more silly, because you still like and buy it, even because of these exact reasons. We swim in a toxic pond and get angry about the thrown away banana peel…
So i repeated myself too much and hope this shit made any sense. When you have the urge to yell at me or have something more to say to the topic, feel free to spam me.
charmwitch fragte: Dirk, I've followed your art for a very long time and it never ceases to be wonderful. Please continue to make lovely things because you're honestly a super fantastic artist and so inspiring. Thanks so much.
Thanks so much! Love your stuff too! And I will never stop, but like things are looking right now I have to focus on other things and it does not pay any bills. When i get a job in the field, i guess it would make the situation a bit more brighter.
Anonym fragte: Are you sure you entertain people with your stuff?
Are you sure you know what you just asked? But yeah, I hope so?
Looking what the majority prefers, I guess I am a random alienated guy trying to fit into a corner and can be happy to have some fans.
But a more noble goal is to ‘challenge’ my people than ‘entertain’ them, the entertainment comes with the challenge.
aricatuesday fragte: Hey Dirk! Long time, no anything! How goes?
